CULTURE CLUB TOUR 2016
Culture Club, the British new wave soul group led by the flamboyant, gender-bending vocalist, Boy George, burst on to pop scene and ruled the charts beginning in 1982 before imploding due to in-fighting and George's growing drug addiction a few short years later. The group managed to kiss and make-up for the first time in 1998 and now all the original members (which include Roy Hay on piano and guitar, Mikey Craig on bass and Jon Moss on drums) are on their first major world tour together in fifteen years.
I caught one of their West Coast stops on August 27th at the Hollywood Bowl and the band's sound was greatly enhanced with backing by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra who also opened for the band. The last time I heard George live, during a Halloween event in West Hollywood last year, the singer sounded raspy and had difficulty hitting all the notes.
When the group came out performing "Church of The Poison Mind", the Boy, in the first of three costume changes, wearing a wildly colorful, over-sized hat with matching suit, was in fine voice with three amazing female vocalists helping to fill out the song. Their hits came in a steady stream with "I'll Tumble 4 Ya", "It's a Miracle", "Time ( Clock of The Heart)" and "Miss Me Blind". Culture Club even performed a couple of songs from Boy George's solo efforts with his versions of Bread's "Everything I Own" and "The Crying Game".
During one of the costume changes, there was a surprising and quite moving moment with a brief musical tribute to David Bowie. As images of the late singer from his Ziggy days flashed on video screens, the band performed "Life on Mars?" as an instrumental with backing from the L.A. Phil which sounded amazing.
The Boy was in good spirits, making jokes about our political race and announcing some of the famous faces in the crowd (which included Sting as he told a silly, semi-uncomfortable story about him) although he appeared to almost get in to some sort of scuffle with a person in the front row but quickly dismissed them. It seems the notoriously feisty singer has actually mellowed with time.
The show closed with a re-working of their minor 1984 hit, "The War Song" which George recalls the group receiving a lot of flak back then for the over-simplistic message but now quite proud of how timely the tune has become. Culture Club came back out by audience demand and performed an encore of their best-known song, "Karma Chameleon" and closing the evening with a hard rocking cover of T. Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)". It was a really fun trip back down Memory Lane with one of my favorite bands of the '80's.
Here is the music video for "It's a Miracle" which featured highlights of the group's career at that point:
And here is Culture Club performing live recently in Australia one of favorites songs, "Black Money", which George said during our show that he has no idea what it means. And he wrote the song:

RANDOM SIGHTS + SOUNDS
First, here is some classic '70's soul to get you up on your feet:
"Band of Gold" - Freda Payne (1970) mp3
"Mr. Big Stuff" - Jean Knight (1971) mp3
"Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" - The Dramatics (1971) mp3
"Treat Her Like a Lady" - Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose (1971) mp3
"I Love Music" - The O'Jays (1975) mp3
Sia contributes a haunting version of "California Dreamin'" for the soundtrack of "San Andreas", the upcoming Dwayne Johnson action flick about "the big one" finally hitting L.A. The singer really brings her signature drama to this melancholy song that makes it truly memorable.
"California Dreamin'" - Sia (2015) mp3
I can't believe the music of the '90's is considered "old-school" but here we are. Kat Graham uses a sample of TLC's "What About Your Friends" and pays tribute with her new single, "1991". The video takes us back to the time of house parties and the cabbage patch:
Country-music sweetheart, Taylor Swift continues to build on her reign as a pop star with a glossy, star-studded, rap-assisted music video for her latest single, "Bad Blood". Directed by Joseph Kahn and featuring Kendrick Lamar, Swift plays a member of a band of tough, sexy agents training for some kind of mission. See how many of the famous faces in the clip you recognize.:
Finally, here's a flashback with Culture Club. The song is "Mistake Number Three" and was off their 1984 album, "Waking Up With The House On Fire". Although it didn't burn up the charts, I liked this single. But what I really love is the music video. Boy George was in full glam mode in this wild, over-the-top spectacle that has to be seen to be believed:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MTV
I can't believe that MTV is actually THIRTY YEARS OLD today. It's so crazy to me because it doesn't seem that long ago.
I admit it has been many, many years since I have actually watched MTV beyond catching an episode or two of the reality train wreck, "Jersey Shore" but there was time when I would watch the channel every chance I could get, although this was back when it was actually a music station.
MTV premiered today in 1981 with five hosts called, "video jockeys" or VJs and they were: Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Martha Quinn, Alan Hunter and J.J. Jackson (who passed away in 2004) and the first video aired was The Buggles', "Video Killed The Radio Star
In some ways that song was accurate as the music video became a powerful tool in promoting music, with record labels spending up to a million dollars on one clip, and created innovative short films that creatively merged music and images. MTV even helped get some of these songs radio airplay based on the popularity of the music video although, the downside to all of this began when the music industry placed an unhealthy emphasis on a band's image with the music sometimes becoming an afterthought which saw a rise of artists who were camera-ready but lacking in true musical abilities. The worst case was the Milli Vanilli scandal where the performers who were in the music video singing and even won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist had actually never sang a note on the recordings.
MTV clearly changed the face of music and television by launching the careers of many artists such as Madonna, Duran Duran, Culture Club, and Prince as well as made already successful musicians as Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson in to superstars.
There have been rumours that MTV is going to attempt to start showing music videos again but who knows? Maybe the time might be ripe for a reinvention of this medium.
Happy Birthday, MTV and thank-you for the music (video).

THE FIRST TIME: PART TWO
Here is another post of the first time I heard the music of artists that I love and admire:
PAT BENATAR - "IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT" - (1979)
Pat Benatar was trained in musical theater and opera but her heart belonged to rock & roll. She was a regular performer at the Catch a Rising Star club in New York before she was discovered by record executives and signed to a recording contract.
She has released eleven CDs, won four consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock performance from 1980 to 1983 and has been married to her band leader and lead guitarist, Neil Giraldo since 1982 and they have two children.
Although this was the third single off of "In The Heat Of The Night
", it was the first song that brought her to the attention of the masses:

CULTURE CLUB - "KISSING TO BE CLEVER" - (1982)
Culture Club was a British rock group that combined new wave, soul and reggae to create their sound. The group was led by the flamboyant and androgynous lead singer, George O'Dowd or better known to the world as Boy George with Mikey Craig on bass, Roy Hay on guitar and keyboards and Jon Moss on drums.
The band became a world wide sensation, amassing many top ten hits during the early eighties and winning the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1984 before the group broke-up in 1986 due to George's increasing drug problem and his turbulent secret relationship with drummer, Moss.
This is the group's first hit single off of "Kissing To Be Clever

GEORGE MICHAEL - "FAITH" - (1987)
He had been one half of the hit British pop group, Wham! but in 1987, George Michael went solo and released his first album which became a monster hit. It had five #1 U.S. singles, sold twenty million copies world wide, and would go on to win the Grammy Award for Album of The Year.
He has completed only five solo albums in his career, partially due to personal issues and a contract dispute with his record label but he has still managed to sell over 100 million of them around the world.
This controversial song was the first hit off of "Faith
