NEW SOUNDS

 H.E.R.

Since releasing music beginning in 2016 (and taking home Grammys and an Oscar in the process), H.E.R., the r&b musician from Northern California who has almost single-handily brought the guitar back to contemporary soul, still had not delivered her first official album. The twenty-three year old artist has only released several EPs and a compilation album that featured the first two extended plays and new material. Now the singer's first album, "Back of My Mind" has finally just been released. This collection of smooth and mellow r&b features the hit single, "Damage" and the latest, "Come Through", a sensual duet with the problematic Chris Brown. H.E.R. also has Lil Baby, Ty Dolla Sign, Thundercat and DJ Khaled making contributions to this impressive debut.

JESSIE J

While breaking out in a sweat at the gym, I began to wonder what had happened to Jessie J after seeing the music video for her song, "Domino". It had been ten years since that breakout hit for the British pop vocalist here in the US and almost four years since we had any new music from her when she released a studio album, "R.O.S.E" and a Christmas album. And now I have an answer; Jessie J has just dropped a new song called "I Want Love". This mid-tempo dance track has a music video that was inspired by a real incident that happened to the big-voiced singer who was born Jessica Cornish. After having an argument with a boyfriend at a black-tie event, she finds herself spending the evening in a dive bar drinking with some new friends and dancing joyfully alone. This is the first preview of music from Jessie J.'s upcoming fifth studio album which is due out later in the year.

And we have the latest from Megan Thee Stallion with "Thot Shit". Fed up with men that were being critical of her for unapologetically embracing her sexuality, Megan decided to take them on, reclaiming the word, "thot'" as a term of female empowerment. The music video for the song takes this idea even further. This hilarious, horror-themed clip features a conservative Senator writing hateful comments while watching one of  Megan's videos (and about to pleasure himself ) when the performer's alter-ego, Tina Snow calls him up to take him down. We then watch this Senator get tortured by Tina and her team of "hotties" as they aggressively twerk wherever he goes. The lesson learned here is don't mess with Megan.

THIS CHRISTMAS DAY

I think Jessie J, the British pop-soul vocalist, is vastly underrated as a singer and hasn't become nearly as popular here in the US as I think she should. The singer, born Jessica Cornish, has recently released her fifth album but it is unexpectedly a Christmas collection. "This Christmas Day" features many of the familiar holiday classics like "Jingle Bells", "Silent Night", and "White Christmas" yet they are delivered in great jazzy-flavored soul renditions. What is even more impressive is that Jessie J was able to attract several top names to produce the album. That includes David Foster, Babyface (who also provided vocals on their take of "The Christmas Song"), Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins who also co-wrote the title track with Jessie which is the only original song on the album. I think this is one of the better modern Christmas albums out there and you should definitely check it out. Here are a few tracks for you to preview:

NEW SOUNDS

Although it wasn't really planned (I swear!) but this one is all about the ladies. I offer a few samples from an eclectic mix of female musicians who will warm up the upcoming chilly season with some exciting new music:

Tamar Braxton - "The One" (2013)

Yuna - "Falling" (2013)

Amel Larrieux - "Afraid" (2013)

Celine Dion has returned to recorded music with a new song, "Loved Me Back To Life". It's been six years since her last English-language album and this will also be the title of the forthcoming release due in November. This tune feels very contemporary and fits perfectly in the current pop landscape :

"Loved Me Back To Life" - Celine Dion (2013)

"Wild" - Jessie J (2013)

"Strange Warnings" - Rose Elinor Dougall (2013)

Here is a remix by Chromeo & Oliver of one of my all-time favorite songs by Donna Summer. "Love Is In Control" has been worked over and given a modern spin while maintaining the spirit of the original (which is what all good remixes should do). There has even been a new music video made which incorporates clips of the video created for the original version featuring the Queen of Disco, which I had never seen before:

Cher's comeback single, "Woman's World" now has a music video. While I'm still not much of a fan of the tune but I am really digging this vid which is wild, wacky and typically Cher. This ageless performer has shown these younger girls (Hello, Miley) how to be outrageous and a little out there without having to try so hard:

HOT AND FRESH OUT THE KITCHEN

"STONE ROLLIN'" -  RAPHAEL SAADIQ

Raphael Saadiq is a one man neo-soul movement and the world is a better place for it.

This former member of Tony! Toni! Tone! is continuing the old school r&b sound that he used on his terrific last album, "The Way I See It"  but this time he is incorporating a bit of rock & roll to the mix. Mr. Saadiq is an underrated talent and "Stone Rollin'" is the perfect blend of rock and soul and I hope people discover this.

The only downside to this project is the awful album cover but I can overlook it.

I love this song from the album:

"Good Man" - Raphael Saadiq

"LOVE?" -  JENNIFER LOPEZ

Actress and "American Idol" judge, Jennifer Lopez has returned to music with her first album since 2007's "Brave".  "Love?" is her seventh CD and  has production assistance from some of the hottest producers working today such as Tricky Stewart, Red-One and The Dream.

While the first single, "On The Floor" is a somewhat, surprising top-ten hit but I don't think there is anything else on this record that is going to get her much radio play as the songs all feel like rejects from any one of the current female pop singers out now using these same producers and have basically the same sound.

Ms Lopez has never been known as a great singer but there is an unusual lack of any inspired vocals. "Love?" comes across as a desperate attempt by Ms Lopez to try and keep up with what is hot right now instead of making a move  forward in dance music.

This is the title track which is the only other song that I kinda like:

"(What Is) Love?" - Jennifer Lopez

"WHO YOU ARE" - JESSIE J

Jessica Cornish's initial claim to fame was as a songwriter and she co-wrote the only song that I will admit that I like of Miley Cyrus: "Party In The U.S.A.".

The twenty-three year old Brit, who is now known professionally as Jessie J, has released her debut album, "Who You Are [Explicit]", where she is now singing the songs that she wrote. Already a smash in her homeland since February, with the album reaching number two on the charts and selling over a million copies, it has finally hit stateside.

It is a collection of hip-hop flavored pop that is in vogue now which is actually part of the problem. She is an interesting artist but isn't offering much that feels particularly fresh or innovative. Jessie J is probably going to have some difficulty breaking through the pack of all of the other female pop vocalists doing the same exact sound.

I do like this track from the album:

"Abracadabra" - Jessie J

This is the music video for the song, "Price Tag" which features B.o.B:

"IN YOUR DREAMS" - STEVIE NICKS

"In Your Dreams" is the first album of new music from Stevie Nicks in ten years and it's well worth the wait. With production assistance from Glen Ballard (Alanis Morrisette) and The Eurythmics', Dave Stewart, Ms Nicks enchants us with her mystical soft rock sounds.

If you are a fan, you will not be disappointed by her latest collection of songs that sticks closely to her particular (and slightly peculiar) thoughts on love

This is the first single off of the album:

"Secret Love" - Stevie Nicks

"THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION" - SADE

"The Ultimate Collection" is all of the musical highlights of Sade's amazing body of work, starting from 1984's. "Diamond Life" to her latest, "Soldier of Love". All of the songs have been remastered as well as featuring three new songs including a remake of the Thin Lizzy song, "Still In Love With You" and two remixes.

Be sure to catch Sade on the North American leg of their world tour, hopefully stopping in a town near you.

Here is one of the remixes, "The Moon And The Sky (Remix)" that features an appearance from Jay Z which is a surprise because Sade has never collaborated  much with other artists:

"The Moon & The Sky (remix featuring Jay Z)" - Sade
