2022 OSCAR NOMINEES FOR BEST ORIGINAL SONG
In little over a week, the winner of this year's Oscar for Best Original Song will be announced and the nominees are a particularly strong group of songs. Beyoncé performs a moving ballad, "Be Alive" for the Venus and Serena Williams bio-pic, "King Richard" which she co-wrote with DIXSON. The only song nominated from the hit soundtrack of the Disney animated feature, "Encanto" is the Spanish language tune, "Dos Oruguitas", written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and performed in the film by Colombian singer-songwriter, Sebastián Yatra. For Kenneth Branagh's semi-autobiographical drama, "Belfast", Van Morrison (a native of the Irish city) composed the score, which uses eight of his classic songs, and wrote a new song, "Down For Joy". Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas wrote the haunting theme song for Daniel Craig's final turn as James Bond with the title track, "No Time To Die". The song was originally released in February 2020 with the film due in May but the pandemic changed those plans. "No Time To Die" finally reached theaters in September 2021, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year. And country legend, Reba McEntire performs "Somehow You Do", the inspirational song by Diane Warren for the film, "Four Good Days" that features Glenn Close and Mila Kunis. This is Warren's thirteenth nomination in this category without a win and while she is greatly admired, I don't think this will be her year.
I would love to see Beyoncé win the award but I think it's likely that Billie Eilish will take home the Oscar since the Academy really loves a James Bond theme. Here are the five nominated songs to hear and judge for yourself:
"Be Alive" from "King Richard" (music and lyric by DIXSON and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter)
"Dos Oruguitas" from "Encanto" (music and lyric by Lin-Manuel Miranda)
"Down to Joy" from "Belfast" (music and lyric by Van Morrison)
"No Time to Die" from "No Time to Die" (music and Lyric by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell)
"Somehow You Do" from "Four Good Days" (music and lyric by Diane Warren)

NEW SOUNDS
BEYONCE
While we have been anxiously awaiting for the return of new music by Beyoncé, what we have received is a song for the soundtrack of "King Richard", an upcoming bio-pic on the story of how a determined Richard Williams (played by Will Smith) helped his daughters, Venus and Serena become two of the greatest players in tennis. After watching an early screening of the film, the singer was moved and inspired by their story, offering to contribute the song, "Be Alive" which she co-wrote and produced with Dixson. This power-ballad contains uplifting words of empowerment with a beautiful, emotional vocal that only Beyoncé can deliver. This is a wonderful treat until she decides to release a complete album.
MITSKI
It's been three years since Mitski broke out with her fifth studio album, "Be The Cowboy", a thrilling collection of art-pop that found it's way on several best albums of 2018 lists. Now the Japanese-American artist, born Mitsuki Laycock, has released a new single, "The Only Heartbreaker", a delicious slice of '80's inspired synth-pop that the performer has made sound simultaneously retro and fresh. This is the second song from her upcoming album, "Laurel Hell" (due out in February and once again produced by her longtime collaborator, Patrick Hyland) with most of the tracks written by Mitski not long after her last album release yet completed during the lockdown last year. Be sure to catch Mitski on the road as she plans for an extensive tour throughout North America and Europe to support the album shortly after it's release.
U2
And about three years have passed since we last heard from the Irish rock band, U2 however, there isn't an album arriving. It's a new song that's part of the soundtrack to the sequel of the 2016 animated film, "Sing" due out in theaters on Christmas day. And I'm sure you might be wondering why U2 is involved with this movie? It turns out that Bono, the lead vocalist of the band, will be lending his voice to a new character, Clay Calloway, a famous rock star lion who is now a recluse with the koala, Buster Moon (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) and his crew of singing animals trying to lure him out to help them with their quest to start a new show in a flashy theater. The song, "Your Song Saved My Life" is a moving ballad that I'm sure will play an important part of the story. Other classic U2 songs ("Where the Streets Have No Name", "I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For", "Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of") will find there way in to the movie, covered by the harmonizing critters in this CGI-animated jukebox musical.

2020 GRAMMY AWARD NOMINATIONS
When the Grammy Awards made the decision to make all categories gender-neutral in 2011, I was very concerned about the idea. With our society long being male-dominated, I was afraid that would be reflected in the nominations for music's highest honor. Initially, the nominations were fairly equal (much to my surprise) yet as time went on there began a shift with men gradually receiving far more recognition. This culminated in 2018 with women being barely acknowledged and receiving only seventeen awards out of eighty-six categories. And when this was called out, the then-President of the Recording Academy essentially told women that if they wanted to be a part of the industry they needed to "step up".
But with the recent announcement of the Grammy Award nominations for 2020, there was a notable shift in who received recognition. Women dominated this year in all categories and made historical firsts in the nominations. Beyoncé leads the pack with nine nominations which includes the single that celebrated Black culture and activism, "Black Parade" while Dua Lipa (for her dance-pop collection, "Future Nostalgia") and Taylor Swift (for the indie-rock album, "Folklore" created during quarantine) both followed with six each. In addition to Swift and Lipa, Jhené Aiko, with her alt-soul collection, "Chilombo" and the sister trio, Haim for their pop-rock album, "Women in Music Pt. III" also received nominations for Album of the Year. Other women who did well include alt-rocker, Brittany Howard with five for her debut solo album, "Jamie" along with Phoebe Bridgers, Billie Eilish and one of the hottest artists of the year, hip-hop performer, Megan Thee Stallion who all received four. And in the Best New Artist category, six of the eight performers nominated are women and in a major first, there are only females recognized for Best Rock Performance and the Best Country Album category has only female-led acts.
Men weren't ignored entirely with Post Malone for his album, "Hollywood's Bleeding", alt-rockers, Coldplay's "Everyday Life", psychedelic soul act, Black Pumas and their self-titled debut album and (a bit of a head-scratcher), Jacob Collier, the twenty-six year old, British multi-instrumentalist and his jazz-pop collection, "Djesse Vol. 3" round out the Album of The Year category. Roddy Ricch, with his breakout hip-hop track, "The Box", received six nominations while Justin Bieber and DaBaby follow with four each.
The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards will be held on January 31, 2021 March 14, 2021 under COVID-19 restrictions. The comedian, Trevor Noah will serve as host for the first time.

Beyoncé has just released a Platinum Edition of her recent, best-selling self-titled fifth album. In addition to a reissue of the original CD and DVD of music videos, this now includes another CD featuring two new songs, "7/11" and "Ring Off" and four previously-released remixes plus a DVD of live performances from The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. This is probably more for the hardcore fan of the singer as the two new cuts, while pretty good, is not worth investing in if you already own the previous album.
Listen to "Ring Off" which seems to be about her mother, Tina Knowles. The song focuses on the painful end of her marriage while Beyoncé encourages her beautiful mama to remove that wedding ring and move on with her life.
"Ring Off" - Beyoncé (2014)
This video for the other new track, "7/11" is crazy but I love it:
IGGY AZALEA
This year, Iggy Azalea has become one of the biggest names in hip-hop pop thanks to her worldwide hits, "Fancy" and "Black Widow". A reissue of her debut, "The New Classic" is now out and called "Reclassified". It features six tracks from the first album and five new songs. The Australian rapper has gotten assistance on some of the tunes from Ellie Goulding ("Heavy Crown"), Danish electro-pop artist, MØ (the first single, "Beg For It") and Jennifer Hudson ("Trouble"). While it took me some time to warm up to Azalea and appreciate her music, I still don't see her as a great talent with a long career ahead of her.
Anyway, listen to my favorite track from "Reclassified":
"Trouble" - Iggy Azalea featuring Jennifer Hudson (2014)
Gwen Stefani disappointed with the lackluster first new music from her upcoming CD but has turned things around with the follow-up release. "Spark The Fire", co-written and produced by her fellow "Voice" judge, Pharrell Williams, is the type of high-energy track that we expect from the singer although it may be just a bit too similar to "Hollaback Girl" for it's own good. Check out the colorful video for the song that is on emoji overdrive:
I loved the new song "Uptown Funk" from Brit producer Mark Ronson as soon as I first heard it. With sizzling, funky horns, a touch of 1980's era Prince and Bruno Mars serving some James Brown inspired vocals, this jam is a modern classic. Here's the music video for this tune:
Finally, here is the video for the next single from my new fav, Sam Smith. "Like I Can" is a slick, black & white clip of Smith and his buddies roaming New York, looking sharp in tuxedos. Simple but effective:

2014 MTV MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS
Back in 1984, I saw the very first MTV Music Video Award program. Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd hosted the show at Radio City Music Hall during the height of popularity for videos. The irreverent show was notable for the first major live appearance of rising star, Madonna who premiered her latest single, "Like A Virgin" in a shocking performance (certainly at that time) that ended with her writhing on stage in a wedding dress. The evening was capped with The Cars taking home the first Video of The Year Award for the innovative clip of "You Might Think".
I've watched all of the following presentations and this marks the thirtieth year. The MTV award show has always been a hit or miss affair with at least some sort of controversial event occurring during the telecast. While music videos are barely even played on MTV now, the awards are still quite popular although it's much harder to cover the show's only purpose which is for performers to showcase their new songs and presenters to plug upcoming projects.
Ariana Grande, Jessie J and Nicki Minaj kicked off the show with each performing a selection from their forthcoming albums before coming together to do "Bang Bang", the uninspired hit they all appear on. With the exception of Sam Smith delivering a moving rendition of "Stay With Me", all of other musicians were lackluster or unmemorable which included Iggy Azalea, Maroon 5, Usher and new pop princess, Taylor Swift.
After being completely dismayed by the generic girl-group, Fifth Harmony beating out the amazing Sam Smith for the Artist To Watch Award and Miley Cyrus sending some apparent former homeless youth up to accept her award for Video of The Year with a speech that seemed to mock the situation, I was ready to turn off this nonsense. However, it was Queen Bee that saved the show from being a complete disaster at the very end. Accepting the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, Beyoncé put all the other performers to shame as she easily displayed why she deserved this honor. The dazzling vocalist went on to deliver a thrilling set as she performed a medley of all of the songs from her recent million-selling, self-titled album. With their baby, Blue Ivy in his arms, Jay Z presented his overwhelmed wife with the award which also served to show the world that they are a solid and united family. Time will reveal how accurate this may actually be but it was still quite a touching and moving moment. If you missed it, take a look:
Let's flashback to Madonna's virgin appearance on the award show thirty years ago:

BEYONCE'S BIG SURPRISE
I'm quite impressed, especially in this day and age, where a secret was actually kept from the public until it was ready to be revealed. Leave it to Beyonce to be able to pull off this seemingly impossible feat and it's paid off quite nicely for this inventive pop star.
On December 13, Queen B dropped her latest self-titled release exclusively for download on Itunes with no fanfare or advanced warning. Dubbed a "visual album", the record features 14 music tracks and 17 videos with Beyonce wanting to change how her music is presented to the world and how she connects with her fans. And her fans have been waiting for this as the worldwide sales have reached over 800,000 copies in the first three days alone. The traditional CD was released today as well as individual track/video downloads becoming available.
No surprise that Beyonce has managed to get some big name talent to give her a helping hand on this project such as Justin Timberlake, Miguel, Sia, Frank Ocean and her hubby, Jay Z.
Here are the complete vids for the first singles, "XO" and "Drunk In Love" and a few sneak peaks of additional clips:

NEW SOUNDS
BEYONCE
The world has been made aware that new music from pop diva, Beyoncé is on the horizon but the real question is when? Recently, another complete song has leaked and it's entitled, "Grown Woman" which a snippet was originally featured in her Pepsi commercial. This tune seems more likely to be a part of the Queen B's next album than the first song that blew up on the Internet earlier this year, "Bow Down/ I Been On".
While I most certainly luv me some Beyoncé but I can't say that I'm really feeling any these new songs and that includes her contribution to "The Great Gatsby" soundtrack, "Back To Black" which she teamed-up with Andre 3000 on a remake of the Amy Winehouse classic. While her attempt to shake-up the tired routine that's happening in pop music right now is greatly appreciated however, the results have been interesting but lackluster. I remain optimistic that Mrs. Carter has some more tricks up her sleeve that will surely make me stand-up and take notice.
Listen to the track and let me know what you think:
"Grown Woman" - Beyoncé (2013)
Here is the commercial for Beyoncé's line of swimwear for H&M that features a bit of another new song, "Standing On The Sun":
DAFT PUNK
One of my favorite songs out right now is "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk that features Pharrell Williams on vocals and guitar work by Nile Rodgers. This hot jam takes the shimmering disco of Rodgers's group Chic and perfectly merges it with Daft Punk's electro grooves. "Get Lucky" has quickly taken the world by storm and has topped the charts in several countries.
The French EDM duo, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (who conceal their identities by wearing elaborate robot costumes) have decided to overhaul their music by adding live instruments and with great effect on their impressive fourth studio album, "Random Access Memories". Daft Punk have also enlisted an eclectic group of contributors including Panda Bear, Chilly Gonzales, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Oscar-winning composer, Paul Williams and the man who is considered "the godfather of electronic music", Giorgio Moroder who is paid tribute to on the track, "Giorgio by Moroder" in which the legendary producer discusses his life and career over a throbbing beat. This album is a funky, chaotic, jumble of sounds and textures that will serve as the perfect background to all your summer activities.
Enjoy this slick clip of "Get Lucky":
Here is another great song from the new release that features Panda Bear, "Doin' It Right":

JESSICA SANCHEZ
I had checked out of "American Idol" a couple years ago as the reality show had become far too predictable and I really had no interest in watching the antics of some of the train wrecks that made-up the judging panels. However, I did catch part of an episode from season eleven that featured Jessica Sanchez performing. I have no real recollection of what she sang but I do remember being quite impressed by the talent of this young singer.
Ms Sanchez didn't go on to take home the top prize but did place as runner-up and earned a recording contract. The now seventeen year-old has just released her debut, "Me, You & The Music". The first single, "Tonight" is a sizzling duet with Ne-Yo who also co-wrote the tune. While it's pretty much like the rest of the standard r&b/pop songs that is populating the airwaves these days but Ms Sanchez elevates this material with her soaring vocals. This is a nice introduction and just a tiny taste of what Jessica Sanchez is capable of delivering in the future.
Take a look at the music video for "Tonight" (maybe it's just me but she keeps making me think of Brandy when I watch her in this):
I'm sure there are plenty of great remixes of "Tonight" out there but here is one that I like by DJ Craig Welsh:

MY TUNE OF THE DAY
Today's tune is a hot track from Beyonce off of her latest album, "4" which is one of my favorites. "Party" is slinky, slow-groove that features not only Kanye West but also Andre 3000. This song has been released primarily for the urban market and hopefully it will make some noise on the charts as the album hasn't done nearly as well as anyone would like:
"Party" - Beyonce Featuring Kanye West and Andre 3000
This is the music video for the song in which B is giving us trailer-trash diva who is partying with her sister, Solange and former Destiny's Child member, Kelly Rowland who both make cameo appearances. No sign of her baby bump in this clip but the biggest change is that J. Cole has replaced Andre 3000, for some unknown reason, providing a new rap at the bridge of the song. It's not nearly as good but no major harm done:

HOT AND FRESH OUT THE KITCHEN
BEYONCE - "4"
Beyonce is back, after a brief hiatus, with her fourth album appropriately entitled, "4". She has assembled the usual suspects of top producers (Babyface, The Dream, Ryan Tedder, Tricky Stewart) to help her put this ambitious project together and it's clear she wanted to challenge and push herself musically but the results are decidedly half-baked.
Although a lot of the new music is what you would typically expect from Beyonce but I'm having difficulty warming up to some of the songs. The first single,"Run The World (Girls)
, took some time but I have finally begun to appreciate (The rocking music video has certainly contributed to that) but the other songs released, the ballads, "1+1" and "
Best Thing I Never Had" have left me unimpressed, but there are definitely some nice cuts on the album such as "Countdown" and "Party" that features Andre 3000.
Despite the old-school r&b flavor and the fresh beats, nothing really stands out as it should although you can tell there was much thought and effort put in to this album.
This is a song that I really like:
"Countdown" - Beyonce (2011)
DANGER MOUSE & DANIELE LUPPI - "ROME"
When producer/songwriter, Danger Mouse (best known for his work with Gnarls Barkley and Broken Bells) and film composer, Daniele Luppi met, they both realized that they both shared a love of the work of Ennio Morricone, the composer of the classic music scores of the spaghetti westerns of the 60's and '70's.
They have come together to make a loving tribute to that sound with the album, "Rome"
, named after the city where they did most of the recording. The duo enlisted the help of Jack White, formerly of The White Stripes and jazz/pop artist, Norah Jones to provide vocals and lyrics on some of the tracks. The music has a familiar feeling, since they used some of the musicians that actually worked with Morricone when he recorded his scores, yet seems very modern with lush instrumentals and haunting rock guitars.
"Two Against One" Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi featuring Jack White (2011)
THE CARS - "MOVE LIKE THIS"
One of the first commercially successful new-wave rock bands, The Cars had many hit songs such as "Just What I Needed
", "Drive", and "
You Might Think" but the group broke up in 1988.
The band has now reunited twenty-four years after their last album, "Door To Door
" to release their seventh, "Move Like This". All of the original members, Elliot Easton on guitar, keyboardist, Greg Hawkes, drummer, David Robinson and Rik Ocasek, lead vocalist, guitarist and head songwriter, are back together (with the exception of bassist/singer, Benjamin Orr who passed away in 2000).
Produced by Jacknife Lee (who also played bass on the album) and The Cars, this new material retains their classic sound but moves the band in to the present. The Cars have also begun a North American tour to support the album.
Enjoy this track off of the new album:
"Blue Tip" - The Cars (2011)
BON IVER - "BON IVER"
Justin Vernon left his progressive folk band, Deyarmond Edison in North Carolina, retreated to his father's hunting cabin in Wisconsin and eventually created, "Bon Iver". The results became the album, "For Emma, Forever Ago" in 2007 which was a stripped-down affair that involved just a laptop, his voice and guitar.
It caught the attention, of all people, Kanye West who asked Vernon to work with him on his album, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy [Explicit]"
. Four songs they collaborated on ended up on the album including my favorite track, "Lost In The World
"
.
Now, Vernon has released his latest self-titled album, "Bon Iver [+Digital Booklet]
" where he has seemed to have used his experience with Mr. West to progress his own musical endeavor which has this new work feel sonically larger. The results are eerie and beautiful.
Here is a great track from the album:
"Hinnom, TX" - Bon Iver (2011)
FOSTER THE PEOPLE - " TORCHES"
Foster The People is a LA-based alt-rock band that first came together in 2009. Originally called "Foster and the People" but it was frequently misheard as "Foster The People" and the name stuck. The members are Cubbie Fink on bass/background vocals, drummer, Mark Pontius and Mark Foster on vocals, keyboards and guitar. Sean Cimino and Isom Innis perform with the band on tour.
The band has just released their first CD, "Torches" after a self-titled EP was put out earlier this year. The album debuted at number eight on the Billboard Top 200 Album Charts and the first single, "Pumped Up Kicks
" climbed to number one on the Billboard Alternative Song Chart.
Extensive touring, appearances at music festivals and exposure on music blogs helped Foster The People's quick rise to success.
"Houdini" - Foster The People (2011)
JILL SCOTT - "THE LIGHT OF THE SUN"
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Jill Scott began her performing career as a spoken-word artist which evolved in to singing when she met ?uestlove of the hip-hop group, The Roots. She toured with the band as a background singer and together they wrote the band's hit song that featured Erykah Badu, "You Got Me [Explicit]" in 1999 which led to her debut album,
"Who Is Jill Scott? - Words And Sounds, Vol. 1" the following year.
Ms Scott has now released her fourth CD, "The Light Of The Sun (Deluxe)"
and her first under her own label, Blues Babe Records (named after her grandmother) which is distributed by Warner Bros. Records. She was part of the original neo-soul movement in the late 90's that blended together classic soul with hip-hop and her music remains warm, sensual, thoughtful and positive which is very refreshing in today's musical landscape.
Here is a perfect example of her sound:
"Shame" - Jill Scott featuring Eve
This is the new video for Lady Gaga's new single, "The Edge Of Glory
". This is the first song off the new album that I really like and this video is great because of it's simplicity. No meat dresses, giant eggs or any other grand theatrics, just Gaga dancing in the city streets, wearing a demure (for her) leather bondage gear. This video is also bittersweet as it also marks the last musical appearance of the late Clarence Clemmons:
This is the music video for Robyn's "Call Your Girlfriend
" and I LOVE THIS SONG! I just don't understand why it's not getting any proper airplay on US pop radio. This is much better than a lot of the crap that is getting played.
Anyway . . now, this is an example of simplicity: just Robyn singing and dancing, wearing the latest in Swedish fashion (just kidding, I hope) and it just works.

LADY GAGA: BORN THIS WAY
Lady Gaga has returned with her long awaited new album, "Born This Way
As much as Gaga likes to think of her self as an "artist", much of her show felt artless. In fact, the only part I truly enjoyed was during the end credits when she was backstage singing a passionate a Capella version of "Born This Way" with her background singers. It was beautiful in it's simplicity and I would really love to have a recorded version of this but the rest of the show was fine musically but whatever message she is trying to convey tends to get muddled by all of the random and meaningless visual noise.
I think her insistence of being Lady Gaga 24/7 is ultimately going to be detrimental to her to health with all of the pressures of fame combined with the short attention span of her fans and the inevitable critical backlash, I'm afraid to say that she is a nervous breakdown waiting to happen.
As for her new music, this is a strong collection that makes the songs are on debut, "The Fame
Have a listen to a few of my favorite tracks from the new album:
"Marry The Night" - Lady Gaga
"Government Hooker" - Lady Gaga
"Schibe" - Lady Gaga
This is the video for the second single off the album,"Judas" in all of it's excessive glory:
And as a bonus, here is Beyonce's new video for "Run The World (Girls)", a song I don't care for but I LUV the video. You can clearly see how she has been influenced by Gaga's eccentric imagery:
