MY FAVORITE SONGS OF 2023
This past year in music, it reminded me of a time when I was a strange, awkward teen listening to AM radio in the 1970's. Back then it was common for stations to play all genres of music, tossed together indiscriminately, where it would create the ultimate pop music playlist. Over time, music became much more segregated but largely thanks to TikTok, we had a jumble of various sounds finding their way into our ears; classic soul, hip-hop, country, dance-pop, world music, Latin-pop, a bit of jazz and older music which were tunes that didn't receive much attention when initially released or songs that were popular years ago but have been rediscovered by a new generation. I really love this trend of as I don't believe that most people only listen to one style of music. The possibilities of discovery are endless, making this new year exciting and full of promise.

RANDOM SIGHTS + SOUNDS
After teasing this album's release since 2019, it appears that Nicki Minaj's fifth studio album will finally be out to the world. And while it's understandable to be a little bit skeptical, "Pink Friday 2" has been given an exact release date of November 17th. This record is somewhat a sequel to her 2010 debut and Minaj appears ready to venture back to the more pop sounds of her early days. We had gotten a little sample with the first single, "Super Freaky Girl" (which debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart) and the follow-up release, "Last Time I Saw You" is a rap-ballad that features Minaj prominently using her singing voice. This emotional song (written only by Minaj) explores coping with loss as the rapper had her father sadly pass away shortly after the joyous event of the birth of her son.
How many of you remember Exposé? They were a popular female trio who first found success on the dance floor in the mid-eighties before moving over to the pop charts, ruling the US charts until disbanding in 1993. This band was the mastermind of Lewis Martineé, a Miami DJ and producer, who wanted to form a dance group. He found three female singers, called them "Exposé" and put together a single. "Point of No Return" would reach the top of the Billboard Dance chart in 1984 which helped introduce the sounds of Latin freestyle. Record labels became interested, and they eventually signed with Arista Records.
During the recording of the debut album, the original singers either quit or were fired, depending upon who you ask. A new line-up was created with Gioia Bruno, Ann Curless and Jeanette Jurado and their album, "Exposure", released in 1987, became a hit with the singles, "Come Go with Me", "Let Me Be the One" (my favorite), "Seasons Change" and a re-recorded version of "Point of No Return" all reaching the top-ten on the pop chart. The 1989 follow-up album, "What You Don't Know" produced more top-ten hits for Exposé: "When I Looked at Him", "Tell Me Why" and the title track. By the time of their third, 1992 self-titled album, Bruno had left the group due to health issues and was replaced by Kelly Moneymaker, the band was waging a legal battle over profits with Martineé and the album failed to achieve great commercial success. Exposé would first reunite in 2003 and Bruno would rejoin three years later with Moneymaker remaining as an honorary member. In 2007, the singers sued over the rights to use the name "Exposé" and it would take four years for them to win the trademark.
And I would like to pay tribute to a couple of gifted musicians we have lost this month.
Best known for the eerie atmospheric sounds and mystical lyrics of his 1975 hit, "Dream Weaver", Gary Wright passed away on September 4th at the age of eighty. He began his career as a child actor, appearing in the 1954 Broadway production of the musical, "Fanny". But he had always loved playing music, learning how to play several instruments, but after deciding that a career in this field was too unstable, Wright went on to study medicine in college. But a trip to Europe changed his plans to become a doctor, forming his own band and touring throughout the continent. Wright settled in England in 1967, developing connections with other musicians and joining a blues-rock band, Spooky Tooth. After three albums, Spooky Tooth was over, and Wright decided to pursue a solo career in 1970.
His debut, "Extraction" didn't generate much interest, but it did lead to Wright being invited to play piano on George Harrison's 1970 album, "All Things Must Pass". Wright would go to play on several of the former Beatle's subsequent albums, but he hadn't given up on his own musical aspirations. It would take until his third recording effort, "The Dream Weaver" for Wright to breakthrough with the title track (inspired by "Autobiography of a Yogi" which was given to him by Harrison) peaking at number two on the US pop chart. Another song from the album, "Love is Alive" would also only make it to number two on the chart. This would be the highlight of Wright's career, but he would continue to make music, rejoining Spooky Tooth to tour and making nine more solo albums with his last release was "Connected" in 2010.
Steve Harwell, the lead vocalist of the '90's alt-rock band, Smash Mouth, died on September 4th. He had struggled with several health problems over the last decade and was forced to leave the band in 2021. Harwell was only fifty-six. Born in Santa Clara, CA., he began his start in music as part of a rap act called F.O.S. which stood for "Freedom of Speech". They had released a single before Harwell decided what he really wanted to do was rock.
With Greg Coleman on guitar, Paul De Lisle on bass and drummer, Kevin Coleman, Smash Mouth was born in 1994. They were signed with Interscope Records and their 1997 debut album, "Fush Yu Mang" (a take on Al Pacino's bad Cuban accent in "Scarface") featured their first hit, "Walking on the Sun" which reached number two on the US pop chart. Two years later, Smash Mouth broke through with their follow-up album, "Astro Lounge" that had two big hit singles, "All-Star" and "Then The Morning Comes". Harwell and the band also charted with a cover of the Monkees 1966 number-one hit, "I'm a Believer" for the soundtrack of the 2001 animated movie, "Shrek".

BARBIE: THE ALBUM
Based on the world's most famous doll, "Barbie" is the first live-action movie of this iconic toy. Margot Robbie brings this plastic fashion doll to life and Ryan Gosling play Barbie's long-time boyfriend, Ken. Greta Gerwig has co-written (with her partner, filmmaker Noah Baumbach) and directed this comedy-fantasy and has attracted an impressive cast that includes Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir with Will Ferrell as a toy company CEO and Helen Mirren as the narrator.
And the movie has an upcoming soundtrack, "Barbie: The Album". Mark Ronson, who is the executive producer of this record, was asked to get involved in curating the music by Gerwig to help match her vision for the film to feature the sounds of fun, high-energy pop. Ronson set about his mission and has assembled an impressive list of contemporary musicians to participate and the line-up is impressive; Lizzo, Charli XCX, Ava Max, Karol G., Haim, Khalid, Gayle, Fifty Fifty and Dua Lipa who released the first single, "Dance The Night". And Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice teamed up to bring some hip-hop on "Barbie World" which features a sample of the notorious '90's hit, "Barbie Girl" by the Danish Europop band, Aqua. Even Gosling, who showed off his musical abilities in the 2016 movie, "La La Land", has a track on the album called "I'm Just Ken".
"Barbie: The Album" is due out on July 21st, the same day as the movie's release. Not all of the artists on the soundtrack have been revealed yet with some surprises still left to be announced. One of the first made public on July 6th was Billie Eilish with her musical contribution, "What Was I Made For?" with more mystery musicians on the horizon.

NEW SOUNDS
Since the very beginning of her career, Janelle Monae has been proudly queer, long before she even came out publicly as pansexual and non-binary. And with her fourth studio album, "The Age of Pleasure", the singer now feels liberated to express her music even more openly. This collection delivers feel-good vibes with songs threaded with reggae and Afro-beats that focus on the sensual pleasures of the mind and flesh. Even Monae's image has loosened up. Gone are the little, black & white suits and in their place is the singer in skimpy clothing, revealing much more of her beautiful satin skin than we had ever seen before from the artist. This includes the music video for the single, "Lipstick Lover" which shows a lot of female skin and has even been age-restricted on Youtube.
The lawsuit involving pop star, Kesha against her former producer, Dr. Luke, which had begun in 2014, has been quietly settled just a few days ago. Her fifth studio album, "Gag Order" had been released last month with the title making a not-so veiled reference to her on-going legal battle which left her unable to comment publicly. Much like her previous album, "High Road", this record touches on the depression and emotional trauma she has been going through these past few years due to this case. And the songs reflect her overcoming these difficulties with the return of a lighter musical mood, with experimental art-pop and bouncy, electronic beats she was known for in her early days. Kesha plans to hit the road in October to promote the album which I'm sure she will be able to approach from a clearer state-of-mind.
Here are some recent new sounds from Doja Cat, Gwen Stefani, Lana Del Rey, Carly Rae Jepsen and Jaz Elise:
After years of releasing singles, EPs, making numerous featured artist appearances and a studio album that was scrapped then leaked, Kim Petras has finally released her official debut album. With "Feed The Beast", the Grammy Award winner has dropped a mixed-bag of a collection that exhibits the varied styles of dance-pop music she has been creating since 2017. The album features some previously heard tracks like the disco-pop ditty, "Coconuts"; "Unholy", the worldwide smash hit with Sam Smith that won them a Grammy this year; "Brrr" and "Alone" that samples "Better Off Alone" by Alice Deejay and has Nicki Minaj providing her trademark sassy rap. But the rest of "Feed The Beast" feels surprisingly safe and generic, even with her long-time producer, the problematic Dr. Luke having a heavy hand on the project, lacking the powerful magic that made so many of her previous songs so fascinating and fun.

RANDOM SIGHTS + SOUNDS
After the global critical and commercial success of her dazzling, post-disco collection, "What's Your Pleasure?" from 2020 (which certainly helped us get through the pandemic), Jessie Ware is back with some new music. The British artist has just dropped "Free Yourself", another uplifting dance track with Ware teaming up with renowned electro-pop producer and DJ, Stuart Price (Madonna; Kylie Minogue; The Killers; Dua Lipa) for the first time. The music video for "Free Yourself" is set with Ware being a spiritual leader telling her queer congregation to open up and let their freak flag fly wild and proud. This appears to be the first single from Ware's upcoming fifth studio album although no details have been released. She will be in North America this fall on tour, opening up for Harry Styles on some dates and headlining her own concerts. Be sure to check this amazing artist out if you can.
Here are a few new songs with music videos that deliver the perfect summer vibe:
Built around Rick James' 1981 classic, "Super Freak", Nicki Minaj has released another single with "Super Freaky Girl", a slick, playful track that feels reminiscent of her sound from the early days of her career. This is the fourth song that Minaj has dropped this year (following "Do We Have a Problem?", "Bussin" and "We Go Up") yet there is still no word on when her fifth studio album will be released or if any of these songs will actually appear on this record. Two things we do know is that Minaj will be this year's recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards on August 28th which she will appear with a live performance. Minaj will also be a part of a six-part HBO Max docu-series about her life very soon although no exact date has been confirmed.
And finally to honor the memory of Lamont Dozier, one third of the songwriting team of Holland–Dozier–Holland, who passed away on August 8th at the age of eighty-one. Dozier, along with brothers Brian and Eddie Holland, was responsible for helping to shape the Motown sound by writing many of the songs for the soul music label that crossed over to become worldwide pop hits. The Detroit born and raised artist had begun his career as a performer yet didn't find much success. By 1962, he teamed up with The Hollands who also hadn't had much luck as singers to write for the local-based recording company. Their first top-ten pop hits were for Martha & The Vandellas with "Come and Get These Memories", "Heatwave", and "Quicksand". But it wasn't until 1964 when the team got their first number one song with "Where Did Our Love Go?" for a struggling girl group on Motown, The Supremes. Holland–Dozier–Holland would go on to write and produce nine more number one songs for the trio as well as for other artists on the label like Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, the Miracles and The Isley Brothers, eventually amassing twenty-five number one songs during their career.
After the songwriting team left Motown in 1968 over a dispute about profit-sharing and royalties, they founded Invictus and Hot Wax Records which produced hits for acts like Freda Payne, Honey Cone, Chairmen of the Board, and 100 Proof Aged in Soul. Dozier left the Holland brothers in 1973 to work on his own projects, releasing several solo albums as a performer with his most popular charting song being "Trying to Hold on to My Woman" in 1974. He continued to work as a songwriter, returning to the pop charts in 1984 by writing "Invisible", the hit song for British singer, Alison Moyet. He also co-wrote several songs with the British soul group, Simply Red. Dozier teamed up with Phil Collins to write "Two Hearts" for the soundtrack for the 1988 movie, "Buster" (which starred Collins) that was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. And Holland–Dozier–Holland were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Here is a very small sample of the music co-created by Lamont Dozier:

NEW SOUNDS
NICKI MINAJ
Nicki Minaj may have recently become a mother but that doesn't mean she's gone soft. The rap artist hasn't toned down her sexy image but she has shifted directions in her music, offering lyrics that are not as sexually suggestive and getting back to basics from her early days of making mixtapes. Two examples of this change is with her first new singles as lead performer in three years, "Do We Have a Problem?" and "Bussin". Minaj teams up with Lil Baby on both tracks with these artists impressively trading verses. The music video for "Do We Have a Problem?" is a nine-minute, action-filled mini-movie that was directed by Benny Boom. Minaj has stated that this is a preview of what's to come and expect a new album by summer.
KIM PETRAS
With the title, "Slut Pop", there is no question on what the theme of Kim Petras' latest release is about. If you need some assistance, the focus of this seven track EP is about nothing more than sex, each song going on about how much she desperately wants and needs to fornicate, set to throbbing dance-pop beats. This is quite a departure for the German-born pop princess, initially modeling herself after the chic narcissism of socialite, Paris Hilton when she first came on the scene. Now Petras has morphed into the cartoon sexuality of a porn star with a racy, new image to match. Most of these playfully, raunchy ditties (produced by the controversial Dr. Luke) are barely over two minutes long, seemingly readymade for DJs to remix so people will be able to break a sweat out on the dance floor for hours.

NEW SOUNDS
COLDPLAY
The newest single from the British rock group, Coldplay is "Higher Power". The band, made up of lead guitarist, Jonny Buckland, bassist, Guy Berryman, drummer Will Champion and vocalist and pianist, Chris Martin, teamed-up with the renowned Swedish producer of pop, Max Martin to work with them on the track. And while the song might seem to have a religious angle, "Higher Power" was actually inspired by intergalactic ideas involving astronauts and the possibilities of life outside of our planet. The music video features hologram aliens dancing along with the band and was first transmitted to astronaut, Thomas Pesquet aboard the International Space Station to view before anyone on Earth. "Higher Power" is the first release from Coldplay's upcoming ninth studio album with no title or release date available at this time.
NICKI MINAJ
Nicki Minaj released her third mixtape, "Beam Me Up Scotty" in 2009, becoming a game changer for the aspiring hip-hop performer. After deciding she was spending more time on her image than her music, Minaj went to work to change that, focusing on the songs and enlisting guest appearances from some big names in the game: Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane and Drake to name just a few. And this plan worked out quite well for the artist, receiving critical acclaim and a song, "I Get Crazy" reaching the top-forty on the Hip-Hop and R&B charts. Minaj's debut album, "Pink Friday" soon followed and the rest is history.
Now to celebrate this breakthrough, "Beam Me Up Scotty" has been re-released, rearranged and contains three new tracks. Two of those songs, "Seeing Green" (which uses a sample of Heather Headley's "In My Mind" and features Lil Wayne and Drake) and "Fractions" have been getting some play.
P!NK
One musical artist who defies categorization is P!nk. The now forty-one year old performer has been making music since 2000, beginning with her successful R&B-influenced pop debut album, "Can't Take Me Home". After pushing back against her label trying to mold her in the image of a "pop princess" and wanting to take creative control of her sound, she teamed-up with 4 Non Blondes singer, Linda Perry and released the pop-rock follow-up, "Missundaztood" which made her a star on her own terms. Since then P!nk has covered alt-rock, folk and country with her distinctive soulful and gritty voice.
P!nk recently received the 2021 Billboard Music Award for Top Touring Artist and performed live on the show a brief concert of a few of her hits. The singer has just released a new backstage concert documentary, "All I Know So Far" from her 2019 tour of Europe. And there is a companion live album which features a new title track song. "All I Know So Far" (co-written with Justin Paul and Benj Pasek with production by Greg Kurstin) was inspired to offer loving words of advice to her nine year old daughter, Willow. The music video for the song is a short film that features P!nk's family (including husband, Carey Hart and son, Jameson), actress, Judith Light and the one and only, Cher.
And the mother and daughter have already reached the pop charts together with "Cover Me With Sunshine", a song released in February they shared as a duet that found success across the globe.

LM5
Little Mix, the British female pop/soul quartet, is probably one of world's most popular girl-groups that almost no one has ever heard of in America. They are hoping to change that with the upcoming release of their fifth album, "LM5".
The group, made up of Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall and Perrie Edwards, was formed in 2011 on the UK version of the talent-competition program, "The X-Factor". They had each auditioned as solo acts but failed to make the final cut. They were given a second chance to come back and teamed-up to become "Rhythmix". The ladies worked their way up the competition before eventually winning that season's contest. The group decided to change their name to "Little Mix" so not to be confused with a British children's music charity that had shared their original name.
Little Mix's first single, "Wings" debuted on the UK pop chart at number one in 2012 and their album, "DNA" soon followed, peaking at number three on the British album chart. This began their world-wide success with three more platinum albums and chart-topping singles like "Black Magic", "Cannonball" and "Shout Out to My Ex".
With "LM5". the group continues with their powerful vocals and solid harmonies. It seems like this new music should definitely catch the attention of American ears, The first official single, "Woman Like Me" features a reggae-infused pop vibe and Nicki Minaj providing a rap verse. The song has charted across the globe and reached number two in their native country.
Take a look at the recent live performance on the 2018 MTV EMAs of Little Mix with Nicki Minaj performing together "Woman Like Me" and Minaj's latest, "Good Form". And here are two other songs, "Joan of Arc" and the ballad, "Told You So" that have been released to promote the album.
And as a bonus, here is the music video for their first hit, "Wings":

RANDOM SIGHTS + SOUNDS
Sugababes have had six number one singles, eighteen top-ten hits and have sold over seven million records. I'm sure many of you that are American might be asking, "Who are Sugababes?" Well, they were a very popular British female pop act formed in 1998 who not only had this incredible success in their native country but also throughout much of the rest of the world with the notable exception of the U.S. where they never charted. There have been singers that have come and gone in this trio but the most popular line-up included Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Heidi Range. With all of the founding members gone by 2011, Sugababes eventually faded away and ended. For American ears, enjoy a brief sample of the best of Sugababes:
Here are a few new songs I'm enjoying right now:
If this new song by Céline Dion called "Ashes" makes you think of her classic love ballad from the movie, "Titanic", well, it's actually intentional. David Leitch, the director of the upcoming sequel to the smash, comedic super-hero movie, "Deadpool", explains that they wanted a highly melodramatic song for the film and approached the singer to perform the track. And she delivers some remarkably beautiful vocals, taking this ballad to incredible heights. It will be interesting to see how this will be used in the movie but I'm sure it will be both moving and hilarious. Leitch also directed the music video which features an interpretive dancing Deadpool. Be sure to check out the very funny ending of this clip:
Finally, one band from the past I've been thinking about recently are Fine Young Cannibals, a British group, lead by the distinctive vocals of Roland Gift, who had worldwide success throughout much of the '80's and had such hits as "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing" which both reached the top of the U.S. pop chart. Taking their name from a little-seen 1960 Natalie Wood movie, bassist, David Steele and guitarist, Andy Cox had left the ska band, The Beat (The English Beat in the U.S.) and came together with Gift who had departed his ska outfit, Akrlykz in 1984. The trio released their self-titled debut the following year and found international success with the singles, "Johnny Come Home" and a cover of Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" . The glaring exception was in America where the group only achieved a cult following. But that all changed with their next album. "The Raw and Cooked" that brought Fine Young Cannibals to everyone's attention in 1989 and the album went on to sell over three million copies worldwide. But by 1992, the group had disbanded and each moved on to other less high-profile musical directions. Let's take a look back to the sounds of Fine Young Cannibals:

DOUBLE DUTCHESS
After eleven years, Fergie has finally released the long-awaited follow-up to her mega-successful debut solo album, "The Dutchess". Although an unfinished version of the entire album was leaked in July, the official version of "Double Dutchess" is now out. Much like her debut, the forty-two year old mother and soon-to-be former wife to actor, Josh Duhamel has created another solid collection that features an eclectic mix of sounds ranging from hip-hop, reggae, soul, dance and modern pop.
Fergie decided to take full control of this project with her co-producing and co-writing nearly all of the tracks. She also decided to leave her record label, Interscope and to launch her own label, Dutchess Music. The album does feature the singles that failed to get much attention including "L.A. Love (La La)" which was dropped back in 2014 and "M.I.L.F.$" and "Life Goes On" from last year. But the new single, "You Already Know", that includes Nicki Minaj providing her trademark sassy rap, seems to be the step in the right direction. As for the hyper-sexual imagery she's projecting all over the promotional album pictures and videos, it does come across a little extreme and desperate. But I guess you do what you gotta do to get noticed in this competitive pop environment.
Taking a page from Beyoncé and her "Lemonade" album, Fergie has made videos for each of the songs on the album and assembled them together as a film called "Double Dutchess: Seeing Double". Take a look at a few of these videos:

CALVIN HARRIS IS BRINGING THE "FUNK"
After teasing us throughout the year with several tasty jams featuring an eclectic roster of artists, Calvin Harris has just released his fifth studio album, "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1". This ten track collection has the thirty-three year old Scottish DJ/producer moving away from the dance floor and more towards a hip-hop/soul/ska vibe. And he has enlisted the help from some of the biggest names in music right now; Frank Ocean, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Ariana Grande, John Legend and Snoop Dogg to name just a few. One of my favorite songs so far this year is "Slide" which features Ocean and Migos and the album is filled will plenty of other solid grooves that will perfectly add some additional heat to the summer.
"Feels" is the latest single which features Perry, Williams and Big Sean riding on a Caribbean-flavored beat. Enjoy the official video for that tune and here are two other tracks to check out: Nicki Minaj also grooves to a tropical beat on "Skrt On Me' while two rising artists, Kehalni and Lil Yachty deliver a mid-tempo jam with "Faking It".

2015 VMAS
Since when has a MTV Video Music Award been worth fighting over?
First, Nicki Minaj was offended that her video wasn't nominated for Video of The Year (despite earning three other noms) and complained that it was because she wasn't skinny or white enough. Then, Taylor Swift (rightfully assuming Minaj was referring to her) took the bait and publicly defended her honor against the rapper's slam for her receiving a nomination. Recently, this year's host, Miley Cyrus scolded Minaj (through the New York Times, of all places) about her comments while alluding to the performer's well-known unpleasantness.
All this childish drama over nothing has lead to this year's VMAs. It was another spectacle of raunchy irreverence, wacky excess and some old-fashioned weirdness. The one and only Nicki Minaj kicked off the show with a performance of "Trini Dem Girls" and "The Night is Still Young" and guess who made a surprise appearance during the number? The one and only Taylor Swift, proving to the world that they have squashed their fifteen minutes of beef. However, it appears a new one has started after Minaj's win for Best Hip-Hop Video when she calls Cyrus out on stage for her NYT comments. I'm not sure if this bit was staged but if not, I strongly urge Cyrus to watch her flat backside.
The evening had a few other solid musical moments with my favorites include a video recreation on the streets of downtown L.A. by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis of their new single, "Downtown", The Weeknd worked the crowd with a fiery take of his hit, "Can't Feel My Face" and an amped-up version of "Should've Been Us" by rising talent and vocal powerhouse, Tori Kelly. I have never been a fan of Justin Bieber with a performance of his comeback single, "What Do You Mean" and an overly emotional outburst at the end still left me feeling unimpressed. But I will admit that the boy can dance.
And then there was Kanye. He's the recipient of this year's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and guess who presented the volatile artist with this honor? The one and only Taylor Swift who gave a touching tribute, proving to the world that they're on good terms after the rapper drunkenly interrupted her award victory six years ago. West, who virtually issued a public apology to Swift without ever uttering the words, gave a semi-coherent speech that went on about his career and impact as an artist before ending with an announcement of a future run for president. In the age where Donald Trump is considered a serious candidate, why not?
I nearly got whiplash over the rapid speed of how Miley Cyrus went from a sweet, Disney pop princess to a pot smoking, tongue wagging, profanity-laced, sexually outlandish provocateur. I'm not really buying this act. Her wild antics don't feel organic. I seem to recall when Cyrus mentioned Jay Z in her hit, "Party in The U.S.A.", it was revealed that she had never even heard his music. Now, the hardcore stoner is hanging out with Snoop Dogg and other rappers. The whole thing comes across more like another costume, like her previous Hannah Montana one. Perhaps the real Cyrus falls somewhere in the middle or perhaps we will meet another "Miley Cyrus" sometime down the road.
Our host closed out the show with a extravaganza of a performance. It was a new song (part of a free album that Cyrus is giving away to her most fervent fans) that featured a parade of colorful drag queens made famous on RuPaul's talent show. Although the constant sight of Cyrus' tongue got on my nerves, it was fun, bizarre and over-the-top. Just exactly how you expect an evening of the VMAs to be.
Oh, and Taylor Swift took home Video of The Year, proving to the world that she was actually skinny and white enough to win.

BITCH, I'M MADONNA
I think it's the weakest track off of Madonna's "Rebel Heart" but "Bitch, I'm Madonna" is the latest single to be released. What is probably going to bring this song much desired attention is the music video, directed by Jonas Åkerlund who has worked with the artist many times including the clip for "Ray of Light" which won them a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video .
Shot to look like one single take at the Standard Hotel in New York, the video's setting is like a wild and crazy party that Madonna is throwing with many of her famous friends in attendance. The guests feature some of the biggest female names in pop music right now like Katy Perry, Rita Ora, Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj who also performs on the song. Other more unexpected appearances include Chris Rock, fashion designer, Alexander Wang, model, Jon Kortajarena, producer/DJ, Diplo (who co-wrote and produced the track) and what would a celebrity party be without Kanye West.
This all-star video hasn't changed my opinion about the song but it does make it more interesting. It's fun, colorful and attention-grabbing but still may not succeed in getting her new music some radio play. Pop radio should play music that is inventive and inspired but it's shameful that they seriously won't play Madonna only because of her age. The excellent first single, "Livin' For Love" definitely deserved to be played on the air. But this ridiculous mindset does explain the unadventurous nature of most of what is making it on the radio. Anyway, check out the video:
Here's a video bonus of the title song from the album that gave Madonna some long and hard-earned critical respect:

RANDOM SIGHTS + SOUNDS
To kick this off, here are some hot new tracks I'm digging right now:
"Can't Deny My Love" - Brandon Flowers (2015) mp3
"Worship" - Years & Years (2015) mp3
"Alone" - Selah Sue (2015) mp3
"Pedestrian At Best" - Courtney Barnett (2015) mp3
The recent anniversary of "We Are The World" made me think of some of the other amazing musical accomplishments by Quincy Jones. This incredibly gifted musician, producer and humanitarian is probably best known for his work with Michael Jackson but he had a pretty phenomenal career before the King of Pop was even born.
Jones has made several studio albums under his own name with one of his most popular was "The Dude" in 1981. It featured four amazing singles including "Just Once" and "One Hundred Ways" which introduced the magnificent voice of James Ingram to the world.
"Ai No Corrida" - Quincy Jones (1981) mp3
"Razzamatazz" - Quincy Jones featuring Patti Austin (1981) mp3
"One Hundred Ways" - Quincy Jones featuring James Ingram (1981) mp3
Let's hope Brit-pop star, Natasha Bedingfield will be releasing some new music very soon. I think she's one of the more interesting singers out there now and it's been since 2010 since we last heard from her. In the meanwhile, here are a couple of my favorites:
"These Words (I Love You, I Love You)" - Natasha Bedingfield (2004) mp3
"Piece of My Heart" - Natasha Bedingfield (2007) mp3
"Can't Deny My Love" - Brandon Flowers (2015) mp3
"Worship" - Years & Years (2015) mp3

HOT AND FRESH OUT THE KITCHEN
FKA TWIGS - "LP1"
Tahliah Barnett began her professional career as a teenage back-up dancer who appeared in several music videos which earned her the nickname, "Twigs". Now the twenty-six year old Brit has decided to move in front of the mic using the moniker, FKA Twigs which stands for "Formerly Known As". After writing, producing and self-releasing an EP ("EP1") in 2012, Twigs signed with Young Turks Records and released another EP ("EP2") the following year.
Now her full-length debut album, "LP1" is out and creating some serious buzz. Taking elements of classic soul and merging with trip-hop and electronica, the music of FKA Twigs has an ethereal quality despite the hard-hitting beats and quirky rhythms. While she may be too "out there" for the average American listener but I think FKA Twigs brings a much needed freshness to the music scene. See what you think of one of my favorite tracks:
"Give Up" - FKA Twigs (2014)
In the video for the first single, "Two Weeks", FKA Twigs makes me think that she's channeling Aaliyah in the movie, "Queen of The Damned":
ED SHEERAN - 'X"
Ed Sheeran burst on to the scene in 2011 with the acoustic ballad, "The A Team" that reached the top-ten in several countries and earned him a Grammy nomination for "Song of The Year". For his follow-up release, "x" (pronounced "multiply"), the British artist called on top producers, Rick Rubin, Benny Blanco and Pharrell Williams to help expand his sound while still allowing him to keep his guitar in hand. The album is off to a great start with the Williams produced, Justin Timberlake inspired single, "Sing" which has become a world-wide smash, reaching number one in seven countries.
While "x" is a solid production but there's still a whiff of calculation that I find troubling. Sheeran has added current musical trends to some of the songs that seems too much like catering to capture the attention of a pop audience. The problem is that it's doesn't always feel authentic or necessarily a good fit for the talented singer. Anyway, I ain't mad at him because overall, I really like the album. In fact, here is one of the songs that I really like:
"Thinking Out Loud" - Ed Sheeran (2014)
SINEAD O'CONNOR - "I'M NOT BOSSY, I'M THE BOSS"
The one thing you can say about the troubled and controversial artist, Sinéad O'Connor is that she's unafraid to voice her opinion regardless of the outcome. At the height of her fame, she infamously tore up the photo of Pope John Paul II to protest child abuse in the church after a performance on "SNL" in 1992. That act essentially put the brakes on O'Connor's career and never really fully recovered. O'Connor continued to create some interesting music over the years but has garnered little attention from an unforgiving public.
On the cover of her tenth studio album. "I'm Not Bossy, I'm The Boss" (I love that title), O'Connor appears dolled up like her idea of a modern, young pop star. She is back to form with some well-crafted songs about sex and love that are far more insightful and clever than anything from Miley Cyrus. Listen to the first single:
"Take Me To Church" - Sinéad O'Connor (2014)
SIA - "1000 FORMS OF FEAR"
After putting her own career on hold and becoming a very successful songwriter-for-hire for the last few years, Sia has finally decided to record her own music once again. She saved some interesting material for herself but it's far darker than your standard pop tune. Using that full-bodied drawl of a voice, Sia gives these songs an extra edge. "1000 Forms of Fear" is the Aussie singer's sixth studio recording and her first to reach the top of the U.S. Billboard album chart. The moody first single, "Chandelier" has made it to the top ten across most of the globe.
While Sia may have resumed her singing, she has no desire to promote her music in the conventional fashion. No picture of Sia is on the album, she will not appear in any videos and has gone as far as performing live with her back to the audience. This may come across as a bit extreme but it does put the focus back on the music where it actually belongs.
"Big Girls Cry" - Sia (2014)
Nicki Minaj has received plenty of attention for the second single, "Anaconda" from her next release, "The Pinkprint" but it's been more for the cover art than for the actual song. Minaj has left little to the imagination, as she displays the inspiration for the tune and I say, "If you got it, flaunt it".
Sampling the 1992 Sir Mix-A-Lot track, "Baby Got Back", the song is classic Nicki Minaj and burning up the charts:
Kimbra is back with a new song, "90's music" from the soon-to-drop second CD, "The Golden Echo". The video is wild and colorful ode to that decade which includes some of the clothes and dance moves:
Finally, this is my current favorite music video. I don't know anything about this artist, Kiesza but this slick vid for the song, "Hideaway" is a seemingly non-stop dance routine that covers pretty much every dance move that has ever been created:

HOT AND FRESH OUT THE KITCHEN
"TALK THAT TALK" - RIHANNA
I would have lost money if I had bet against the idea that the sweet, young girl from the islands who sang the cute but fluffy, "Pon De Replay" back in 2005 would become one of the biggest pop stars in the world. But that is exactly what Rihanna is now.
"Talk That Talk" is the pop superstar's sixth album over the past seven years. After the darker period of the last two albums, Rihanna is now decidedly in a light, sexy mood, confident and looking for fun. The singer hasn't changed the winning formula too much as there is still a very large stable of hot writers and producers to help mold her sound.
"Do Ya Thang" - Rihanna (2011)
"HOW DO YOU DO" - MAYER HAWTHORNE
Meyer Hawthorne has returned with a fun and funky new album, "How Do You Do" on his new major label, Universal Republic Records. He has continued the old school r&b vibe that was featured on his terrific debut, "A Strange Arrangement" and with this new release, Mr. Hawthorne has delivered an even stronger album of classic silky soul perfectly blended with hip-hop beats. He's even has rapper, Snoop Dogg singing on a track!
"Can't Stop" - Mayer Hawthorne Featuring Snoop Dogg (2011)
"CEREMONIALS" - FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE
Flame-haired, English songstress, Florence Welch has reassembled her Machine (Isabella Summers on keyboards, guitarist, Robert Ackroyd, Chris Hayden on drums, bassist, Mark Saunders and Tom Monger on the harp) to release the follow-up to the band's highly successful 2009 debut album, "Lungs".
On "Ceremonials", Florence delivers a dark, moody and ballad-heavy collection using that unique voice to create more of her wonderfully, quirky orchestral art-rock songs.
"Lover To Lover" - Florence & The Machine (2011)
"STRONGER" - KELLY CLARKSON
The very first "American Idol" winner, Kelly Clarkson is still the best vocalist to come off of that show and with her fifth album, "Stronger" she delivers more of her trademark countryified pop-rock songs with hints of r&b scattered throughout.
Unfortunately, there are no surprises and Ms Clarkson would greatly benefit from stretching herself much further but it's still a solid, entertaining pop album.

"DUETS II" - TONY BENNETT
Veteran pop singer, Tony Bennett has recorded over seventy albums during his long career and has recently made history, at the age of eighty-five, as being the oldest artist to ever have a album debut at the top of the Billboard Hot 200 Album chart.
"Duets II" is the a follow-up to his 2006 hit album, "Duets" which, once again, pairs him up with a wide spectrum of musical artists who perform many classic songs from the Great American Songbook. It includes an impressive list of vocalists such as Faith Hill, Andrea Bocelli, Queen Latifah, Alejandro Sanz, Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse.
Here is Mr. Bennett's amusing duet with a game, Lady Gaga:

"MY LIFE II" - MARY J. BLIGE
Mary J. Blige's tenth studio album, "My Life II" is a sequel (of sorts) to her 1994 album. During the time of the "My Life" album, Mary was dealing with drug addiction, depression and an abusive relationship but she is now a happily married woman with a positive outlook which is reflected in the songs on the latest album.
Although Mary lined up some of the top producers (Darkchild, Danja, Tricky Stewart) and performers (Beyonce, Nas, Drake) on this project but the final results fails to live up to the original album. There are are some fine moments to be found but overall it lacks the true passion and power of some of the classic songs, "You Bring Me Joy", "I Love You" and the title track off of "My Life"
"25/8" - Mary J. Blige (2011)
"NOTHING BUT THE BEAT" - DAVID GUETTA
French DJ, David Guetta is currently one of the most popular record spinners in the world and has very successfully moved in to music production.
On his fifth album, "Nothing But The Beat", Mr. Guetta has once again rounded up a group of all-star talent from the world of r&b, hip-hop and pop to perform on this disc. Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, Lil' Wayne, Jennifer Hudson and Sia are just a few of the names that make an appearance and the collaboration with Usher on the song, "Without You" has reached number four on the pop chart. The relentless, throbbing beats can grow slightly tiresome after a while but for the lovers of dance music, David Guetta can do no wrong.
"Turn Me On" - David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj (2011)
